For injectors, it can be difficult to know whether the dermal filler they use is highly modified or not.

There are a small number of dermal fillers on the market that have a very low degree of modification, about 1%, whereas the majority has a crosslinking percentage of between 3-8% and some even more than that.¹ For many dermal filler brands the level of modification can differ quite significantly from filler to filler.

A high degree of crosslinking means that more of the synthetic crosslinker BDDE has been used. That might lead to a higher risk of immunologic reactions, with delayed onset swelling and nodules.¹ Also, as already mentioned, the filler may be more difficult to dissolve with hyaluronidase.¹
